The new "Liq'tid Garden"

We recently finished a new garden at the STCC called the "Liq'tid Garden". Liq'tid (pronounced leek'teed) is a Lushootseed word for 'red-colored' or 'painted-red'. The garden recognizes and honors "Steilacoom Red" that came from the sacred spring in Steilacoom that produced a red iron oxide clay that the Steilacoom traded with other Tribes.

The project started with a lot of grass, blackberries, and weeds, but over several days it transformed into a beautiful Homestead-inspired garden that now features oak half-barrels and wood chips donated by the Town of Steilacoom. The lower section of the garden surrounds an existing cement pad and is planted with salal, a native plant popular for its berries that are both tasty and used to dye various materials.

We invite you to visit the new garden on the south side of the STCC and to come back soon and often as the red flowers displayed in the garden will change regularly to reflect the seasons.

Steilacoom Tribe Council Member Kenny Dittbenner recently visited the Fort Lewis greenhouse with Nisqually Elders and they were kind enough to donate seeds of many species of prarie and woodland plants for the STCC ethnobotanical garden. And yes, there are even some 'Steilacoom Flower' seeds. Thank you Kenny and Fort Lewis greenouse!

Ancient Futures Capital Campaign Kickoff

Tribal Chairperson Danny Marshall speaks to attendees of the Ancient Futures Capital Campaign kickoff meeting. The campaign will raise money for improvements and repairs to the Steilacoom Tribal Cultural Center (STCC). The goal for the summer-long campaign is to raise $150,000 for the first phase of projects.

Tribal Leader Danny Marshall and his daughter Lacie recently took part in the 2008 Tribal Journey to Cowichan, BC. The Steilacoom Canoe Family joined the Phil Red Eagle's Carver Camp Canoe Family to make the long journey along with many many family and friends that supported the paddlers along the way. Native News: Umatilla Tribe puts first foods first

The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation near Pendleton, Oregon recently started a new project in their Department of Natural Resources (DNR) called 'First Foods'. The project will direct many of the DNR management efforts on traditional foods that connect culture and ecology, such as salmon, game, roots, and berries.
